How friendly are they really?

Discover what really stands out in the Dominican culture?

The Dominican people and their customs have origins in a unique mix of European, Native, and African roots. The Dominican Republic was the first Spanish colony in the New World. For over a century and a half, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have shared the island of Hispaniola. The culture of the Dominican Republic today is the result of many different influences over the centuries. While many Dominicans are accustomed to tracing their heritage to the Spanish conquerors, their roots lie equally with the vanquished and conquered people with whom the Spaniards mixed.

Today's modern culture of the Dominican Republic is varied. Dominicans may regard themselves as being one big Dominican family, la familia dominicana.  However, on this tour you will definitely discover that there are vast differences in class and education that separate different groups. There are very rich people, and there are very humble marginal urban barrio dwellers. Despite these differences, there are many similarities. Some of the traits shared by all class groups are particularity interpersonal relations, Christianity, and popular music.

The metropolitan culture available to the upper class and vanishing (due to economic turbulence as of late) middle class is often comparable to the life of city dwellers in the rich countries of Western Europe and the United States. But this metropolitan culture doesn't reach the poorest people, who may not have the most basic amenities light, running water, sanitary facilities or consumer electronics.

Without a doubt dance and music stand out and in particular merengue. No matter where you go in Santo Domingo City you will hear various styles of music and people dancing.

Art is also very prominent. The Dominican Republic has a long tradition of art. Many fine artists live in this country. Let us take you to some outdoor markets or hit some of the galleries to see what is available. In Santo Domingo stop by the Museo de Arto Moderno.

As you travel around the city the colonial Spanish architecture will catch your eye. Of particular interest is the colonial section of Santo Domingo.

We are confident that as you learn Spanish in the Santo Domingo City, you will fall in love with the local culture.
